Internship with Partners-Jordan, Amman-Jordan- Final Blog
As I indicated on my second blog about the field experience I will facilitate in one of the rural areas in Amman-Jordan as part of my internship at Partners-Jordan, was really a powerful experience. We started our mission for coalition building and strategic planning by setting up the conference room after driving almost three hours to the North of Amman Tafele. We had a full agenda and participants of 18, varied in age from 20-30 women/men of same tribal identity and different occupation. Most of them worked in local NGOs and some were volunteers. They were representatives of nearly every segment of the community.
My work at Tafele was to observe the meeting and to record how many times the men spoke and how many times women spoke relevant to the meeting topics including the break times. More specifically is to describe the interventions of: questions, suggestion, opinion, and observe the roles of both men and women in the meeting. In addition is to observe the times men and women offered to volunteer to take on other responsibilities in upcoming activities.
The most important part was when we asked the participants to map their community in order to decide the areas of their advocacy planning workshops and campaigns. Our work was very well-received in the meeting, but what I noticed at the end that there will always be barriers to start the coalition in rural areas is the funding expectations, participants assume coalition building is to fund the local NGOs financially.
After all, during my daily summer internship experiences, I fell in love with all the work and opportunities that were given to me during the summer. The tasks I was doing gave me the feeling that I am really ready for the next step in my career. I experienced the office projects including leadership roles, collaborating with community members, demonstrating my content area expertise, and reflecting on my practice as an intern.
